Scribble Pictures
I vaguely remember a TV show called Mr Scribble which was around when I was growing up. This is my version of Mr Scribble which I used for an instant lesson. It helps to be confident with drawing (even if your drawings don't look like anything - mine never do!). Enthusiasm is the key to this lesson.
Resources:
- whiteboard and whiteboard markers OR several large sheets of butches paper and fat textas.
Ask a child to draw a few lines on the board.
Get another child (or yourself) to create a picture out of the lines.
To lead into talking about a theme or activity you could either try to draw one of their scribble starters into a theme/story appropriate picture or tell the kids you would like to draw a picture of your own for them. Most kids love watching you draw and will sit with wonder (even if your pictures look like nothing).
There are lots of ideas on the internet or books out there that teach or show you how to cartoon. My kids know I'm not very good at drawing, but I give it a go anyway. We laugh at my 'interesting' drawings and I choose one child to fix up my drawings (they usually look worse after the child has finished but kid involvement is the key to keeping attention).
