Adding Value to Cooking (Making cooking Christ-centred)
Back to Cooking
Cooking is fun and the kids will remember it for ages to come so I try to add a strong Biblical message to every cooking session. Cooking does not last long. The food is eaten and the evidence (and reminder) of the lesson lost... or is it? I've put some simple ways I've used to create lasting messages for cooking.
Placemats/Placecards
Cut a piece of paper or card approximately 6cm x 6cm (placecard). Write either a catchphrase from the lesson or a Bible verse on the card and decorate. Either laminate (to make it more durable), place inside a sandwich bag (will only work for small placecards)or wrap in gladwrap. Serve food on placemat.
Baskets
Cut out a box template and glue together, leaving off the top. Cut a strip of card and staple on as a handle for the basket. Write a catchphrase or Bible verse on the outside and decorate. Place cooking inside to take home. It might be a good idea to line basket with greaseproof paper if the food is oily.
Recipe Cards
Photocopy off the recipe on a piece of card with a border around the outside for the children to colour. On the back put the bible story, the memory verse or whatever else you recipe was about. Put a picture or something for the children to do on the back that the children will be proud of so they show it to the children. This way parents will be involved in their children's learning.
Activity pages
Take a look at the Fruit of the Spirit Cooking Program (on the main Cooking page). Try making your own page that links the cooking into a Biblical lesson with activities or a story. Keep it basic - if you're not doing lots of cooking it shouldn't take long.
